ACCOLEDS: A COPPUL Consortium of Library Electronic Data Services

Training and professional development is an important mission of ACCOLEDS.

  • ACCOLEDS Training Sessions

ACCOLEDS was created in conjunction with the formation of a COPPUL/ICPSR Federation in July 1993. The group began six months prior to the official launch of the ACCOLEDS Federation during a training event held at the University of Calgary in December 1992. This training was led by staff from COPPUL institutions that had previously held an ICPSR membership. The experience of peer-to-peer training was such a success that the group agreed to organize annual workshops to develop skills in the area of data services. In 1996 with the introduction of the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI), ACCOLEDS members agreed to expand the mission of the group beyond activities related to the ICPSR Federation to include training support for DLI, also. Since 1996, ACCOLEDS training has become primarily associated with DLI and serves as the convener of DLI training in the western Canada.
Facilitating communications among the providers of library data services is a priority of ACCOLEDS.

  • ACCOLEDS Discussion List (GUIDO)

An email discussion list was created for this group in 1993 to facilitate communications between training sessions and to conduct Federation business. The list, GUIDO, was named in honour of the Italian restaurant in Calgary where those attending the initial training session dined. At one time, GUIDO stood for Guiding Users to ICPSR Data Online. But the expansion of the acronymn has long since been dropped.

Supporing a network of professionals who provide excellent service is a basic goal of ACCOLEDS.

  • A List of Contacts and Internet links at ACCOLEDS Institutions

Each COPPUL/ICPSR institution has an Official Representative who serves as the university's contact with the ICPSR. This person also has a vote at the biennial business meetings of the ICPSR and is responsible for nominating candidates from her/his university for an ICPSR Summer Program bursary.

The Data Liberation Initiative also has offical contacts with member institutions known as the DLI Contact. ACCOLEDS members are made up of the COPPUL/ICPSR Official Representatives and the DLI Contacts. In most instances, these are the same individuals at member institutions.
