The Data Library collection is comprised primarily of data files obtained from two data sources: Statistics Canada (for Canadian data); and the ICPSR (Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research; primarily American and international data). The Data Library's collection of Statistics Canada, ICPSR, and other data is fully catalogued and may be searched for by investigator (i.e., author), title, subject, or keyword through the University of Alberta Library's The GATE online catalogue.

If a desired Statistics Canada or ICPSR data file cannot be located through The GATE, or is not currently in the Data Library collection, in most cases it may be obtained for the researcher by the Data Library. Both Statistics Canada and the ICPSR maintain websites which allow researchers to search for and identify appropriate datafiles.
